Onychomycosis: Fungi on toenails

Throughout the year and especially when the good weather begins, when sandals and open shoes return, we like to show beautiful and healthy feet. When using an open shoe we can observe that our feet do not have the healthy aspect that we would like, and on the contrary, they present yellowish nails, of irregular or brittle thickness.

Causes of nail fungus

One of the most common causes that make our nails do not look beautiful are toenail fungus or onychomycosis.

According to experts, between 10 and 15% of the population has toenail fungus, and it is precisely with the arrival of spring when the specialized centers have a “peak” of demand to advise and treat these problems.

Dr. Adriana Ribé, dermatopathologist and Director of Ribe Clinic, presents the new Nd: Yag laser for the treatment of toenail fungus to eliminate fungi.

Onychomycosis: Fungi on toenails

Onychomycosis is a fairly common chronic disease. The causes of toenail fungus are multiple: diabetes, immunosuppression, sports practice, excessive sweating of the feet…. It can be a cosmetic problem or a more serious problem that causes pain or abnormal growth of the nail, affecting the quality of life.

The treatment of onychomycosis is medical and involves the application of products on the nails or taking medicines. In both cases are long-lasting toenail fungus treatments, which in the first case require a lot of consistency and in the second case it has side effects for the liver. In addition, the total healing of nail fungus is not always achieved, and recurrences are frequent

Fungal nail treatment with Nd: YAG laser

Dr. Adriana Ribé presents this alternative laser treatment to the application of products on the nails or taking medications to treat onychomycosis. It is a safe and effective laser treatment with results from the first session and without side effects. The Nd: YAG laser micropulses pass through the nail and are absorbed by the fungus without damaging the nail itself or surrounding healthy tissue.

The protocol of the laser treatment of toenail fungus consists of:

  • 4-6 sessions of 5 minutes (1 session every 2 weeks) where the laser light is applied to the infected area and for prevention, the rest of the toenails are treated, experiencing a sensation of heat in the area.
  • From the first session you can see results, getting a pinker and smoother nail. This laser system does not offer side effects
